What the random month generator does
It picks months of the year at random. You can draw a single month, a few months without repeats, or all twelve in a random order. The result can be the full English name, the three-letter short name or the month number.
It is handy when you need a quick, fair decision tied to the calendar: which month to plan a trip for, which month a quiz question is about, or which months to sample from a year of records.
Everything runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or stored.
How to use it
- Choose a format under Show as: Full name (September), Short name (Sep) or Number (09).
- Set How many months you want.
- Turn on No repeats if a month should not appear twice.
- Turn on Calendar order to sort the picked months from January to December. Leave it off to keep them in the order they were drawn.
- Pick how to Separate results with. Comma and space is the default.
- Press Pick months.
A single month shows in large type under Result. Several months appear in a box. Press Copy to copy them. The last ten picks are listed under Recent results until you leave the page. Press Clear to remove them sooner.

How it works
The twelve months are held as a list from January to December. To pick one, the tool draws a random position from 0 to 11.
That random position comes from crypto.getRandomValues, the secure random source in your browser. Raw random bits are turned into a position with rejection sampling. A simple remainder would favour some positions very slightly, because the random range does not split evenly into twelve. Rejection sampling discards the draws that would cause that, so each month has exactly a one in twelve chance.
With No repeats, the list is shuffled with the Fisher-Yates method and the first months are taken, the same as pulling month cards from a hat without putting them back. Calendar order then sorts the picks by month number before they are shown.
Ideas for using it
- Travel planning. Pick a month for a trip, then check what the weather is like there at that time.
- Quizzes and classrooms. Ask students to name the season, the number of days or a holiday in the month that comes up. The numbers format is good practice for reading dates.
- Test data. Generate month numbers for sample records or report filters.
- Audits and reviews. Pick three months of a year at random, sorted in calendar order, and review the records from those months.
- Writing prompts. Draw a month and set a short story in it.
- Challenges. Shuffle all twelve months and assign one habit or goal to each.
Tips and limits
- Equal chance per month. February is as likely as any other month, even though it is shorter.
- English names. Month names are in English. Use the number format if you need a language-neutral result.
- Two-digit numbers. Numbers always have a leading zero, so 9 shows as 09. That keeps them in order when sorted as text.
- More than twelve. With No repeats on, asking for more than twelve months returns all twelve and the status line tells you so. Turn No repeats off to draw as many as you like, up to 1,000.
- Need a full date? The random date generator picks an exact day between any two dates.
Other ways to pick a random month
Excel or Google Sheets. =RANDBETWEEN(1,12) gives a month number. To show the name, use =TEXT(DATE(2026, RANDBETWEEN(1,12), 1), "mmmm"). Use "mmm" for the short name.
Python. calendar.month_name[random.randint(1, 12)] returns a full month name after import calendar, random. Use random.sample(range(1, 13), 3) for three different month numbers.
By hand. Write the twelve months on slips of paper, fold them and draw one from a bowl. A twelve-sided die works too, if you have one.
