Changed your mind? Undo brings the original text back.
Lowercase or sentence case?
“Lowercase” means every letter is small, including the first letter of each sentence: “this is lowercase. so is this.” That is right for email addresses, usernames, hashtags and tags.
If the text is meant to be read as normal writing, you probably want sentence case, which gives “This is sentence case. So is this.”
Other ways to convert uppercase to lowercase
You do not always need a web page. Here is how to do it in the tools you may already have open.
| Where | How |
|---|---|
| Microsoft Word | Select text, press Shift + F3 |
| Google Docs | Format, Text, Capitalization, lowercase |
| Excel and Google Sheets | =LOWER(A1) |
| macOS apps such as Pages and TextEdit | Edit, Transformations, Make Lower Case |
| JavaScript | text.toLowerCase() |
| Python | text.lower() |
| CSS (display only) | text-transform: lowercase; |
The CSS option only changes how text looks on a page. The underlying text stays in capitals, so copy and paste will still give you the original.
Why text ends up in capitals
- Caps lock was on while typing.
- Legacy systems such as older databases and booking tools store everything in uppercase.
- Forms and labels are often filled in capitals for legibility, then need to be reused in normal writing.
- Copied headings from PDFs and slides are often set in capitals for design reasons.
Works with other alphabets
The converter follows Unicode rules, so it handles accented letters and non-English alphabets too. “ÉCOLE” becomes “école” and “ΑΘΗΝΑ” becomes “αθηνα”. Scripts that have no upper or lower case, such as Hindi, Arabic and Chinese, pass through unchanged.
