What bold text from a generator really is
Most apps do not let you choose a font. A bio, a display name or a comment box takes plain characters and shows them in the app’s own typeface. There is no bold button, and pasting from a word processor drops the formatting.
Unicode offers a way around this. It contains complete alphabets that are already bold, drawn as separate characters. They were added so that mathematicians could write a bold x and know it would not turn into a plain x when copied. Because the boldness is part of the character, it survives copy and paste, and it shows up anywhere the font on the reader’s device can draw it.
This bold text generator swaps each letter you type for its bold twin. Nothing is uploaded, and the conversion happens in your browser as you type.
How to use the bold text generator
- Type or paste your words into the Your text box. Press Clear to empty it and start again.
- Look at the large results at the top. They show your text in six bold styles: Bold, Sans Bold, Bold Italic, Sans Bold Italic, Bold Script and Bold Gothic.
- Press Copy next to the style you want.
- Paste it into your bio, post, message or document.
Below the bold styles you will find More styles, a list of every other style on the site, each with its own Copy button. It is useful when you want to mix a bold heading with, say, an italic line underneath.
How the bold letters are made
The bold styles come from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block of Unicode, which starts at code point U+1D400. That first character is a bold capital A. The block holds runs of 26 capitals and 26 small letters for each style, so the tool can find any bold letter by counting from the start of its run.
A few details are worth knowing:
- Bold is a serif style, like a bold version of a book font. Sans Bold has no serifs and looks closer to the text in most apps.
- Only the upright styles include bold digits. Bold and Sans Bold turn 1, 2 and 3 into bold numbers, and the other styles leave numbers alone.
- Spaces, punctuation and emoji are not changed.
- Each bold letter sits outside the Basic Multilingual Plane, so it takes two UTF-16 units. Some apps count it as two characters toward a length limit.
Examples
These outputs come straight from the tool.
| You type | Style | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Bold | Bold | 𝐁𝐨𝐥𝐝 |
| Bold | Sans Bold | 𝗕𝗼𝗹𝗱 |
| Bold | Bold Italic | 𝑩𝒐𝒍𝒅 |
| Bold | Bold Script | 𝓑𝓸𝓵𝓭 |
| Bold | Bold Gothic | 𝕭𝖔𝖑𝖉 |
| Sale ends Friday | Sans Bold | 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆 |
| Chapter 12 | Bold | 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟐 |
| Chapter 12 | Bold Italic | 𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒑𝒕𝒆𝒓 12 |
The last two rows show the digit rule in action: the upright Bold style converts “12”, while Bold Italic keeps the plain numbers.
Where bold Unicode text is useful
- Social media bios, where a bold name or a bold line break helps one part stand out
- Display names and nicknames in games, forums and chat apps
- Comments and replies on sites that strip formatting
- Captions where you want a bold first line, such as a product name or a date
- Plain text emails and notes that you know will be read on a modern device
If the app you use has real formatting, use that instead. Discord, Slack, Reddit and WhatsApp all have their own bold codes, and real formatting keeps your words searchable. The Facebook font generator covers how bold looks in Facebook posts in more detail.
Tips and limits
Keep it short. A bold word or a bold first line catches the eye. A whole paragraph of bold Unicode is tiring to read and looks like spam.
Think about screen readers. Bold Unicode letters are maths symbols to a screen reader. Depending on the reader, “𝐁𝐨𝐥𝐝” may be read as “mathematical bold capital B, mathematical bold small o” and so on, or skipped. Do not put anything important, like a date, a price or a link, only in bold Unicode.
Search will miss it. Most search features do not treat 𝐁 as B. A bold username may be harder for friends to find, and a bold keyword will not help a post show up in search.
Check on another device. Current versions of iOS, Android, Windows and macOS show these letters, but very old phones and some smart TVs and game consoles do not. When a font lacks a character you see an empty box instead.
Watch the length. Because many apps count a bold letter as two characters, bold text can hit a bio limit sooner than plain text would.
