What alternating case looks like
Alternating case switches between a small letter and a capital letter all the way through the text:
tHiS iS wHaT aLtErNaTiNg CaSe LoOkS lIkE.
The style has been around since early internet chat rooms. It became widely known in 2017 with the “Mocking SpongeBob” meme, where a caption in alternating caps repeats what someone said in a mocking tone. Today it is shorthand for sarcasm.
How to make alternating caps text
- Type or paste your text into the box. Pasted text is converted straight away on this page.
- Press aLtErNaTiNg CaSe if you typed the text yourself.
- Press Copy text and paste it into your chat, comment or caption.
How the pattern works
The converter starts with a lowercase letter and then alternates. It counts letters only. Spaces, numbers, emoji and punctuation are skipped, so the rhythm does not break in the middle of a sentence.
| Input | Output |
|---|---|
| I am very smart | i Am VeRy SmArT |
| you can’t park here | yOu CaN’t PaRk HeRe |
| that’s not how it works | tHaT’s NoT hOw It WoRkS |
Want the pattern to start with a capital? Convert first, then press iNVERSE cASE to flip every letter.
Where it works
Alternating case uses ordinary letters, so it works everywhere normal text does: WhatsApp, Discord, Instagram, TikTok, X, Reddit, email and text messages. Nothing special is needed to display it, which is not true of decorative Unicode fonts.
Use it sparingly
Alternating caps is hard to read on purpose. That is the joke. Keep it to a short phrase. Do not use it for information people need, because it slows everyone down and is especially difficult for readers with dyslexia or low vision.
If you want text that looks unusual without the sarcasm, try the Discord fonts generator or the cursed text generator.
