How Discord fonts work
Discord shows every message in the same typeface, and there is no setting to change it for other people. What you can change is the characters themselves.
Unicode includes full alphabets in bold, italic, script, gothic, double-struck and other styles. They were added for mathematics, where a bold “A” and a plain “A” can mean different things. Because they are separate characters, they keep their look wherever you paste them. This generator swaps each letter you type for its styled twin.
How to use the generator
- Type your text in the box at the top.
- Scroll through the styles. Each row shows your text in that style.
- Press Copy on the row you want.
- Paste it into Discord.
Where styled text works on Discord
| Place | Works? |
|---|---|
| Messages | Yes |
| Display name and server nickname | Yes |
| About Me and custom status | Yes |
| Server, channel and role names | Mostly, some characters are replaced in channel names |
| Username (the unique handle) | No, only plain lowercase letters, numbers, underscores and full stops |
The styles you get
- Bold, Italic and Bold Italic for emphasis that works outside Markdown, such as in nicknames
- Script and Bold Script for a handwritten look
- Gothic and Bold Gothic, the blackletter style popular for gaming names
- Double Struck, the outlined letters used in mathematics
- Monospace, Wide and Small Caps for a clean, technical look
- Bubble, Squared and their dark versions for letters inside shapes
- Upside Down, Superscript, Strikethrough, Underline and Slashed
Numbers are converted in the styles that have matching digits. Other styles leave them as they are.
Discord Markdown formatting
For messages, Discord’s own formatting is often the better choice. It is searchable, readable by screen readers and works for everyone.
| Style | Type this |
|---|---|
| Bold | **text** |
| Italic | *text* |
| Underline | __text__ |
| Strikethrough | ~~text~~ |
| Spoiler | ||text|| |
| Inline code | `text` |
| Big header | # text |
| Quote | > text |
Markdown only works where Discord processes it, which means messages. It does nothing in nicknames or bios. That is where the Unicode styles above come in.
Tips
- Keep names readable. A nickname nobody can read or type is hard to mention. One styled word is usually enough.
- Check on mobile. Paste your new nickname and look at it on a phone before settling on it.
- Follow server rules. Some servers ask for names that can be typed on a normal keyboard so moderators can mention members.
The same styles work on Instagram, TikTok, X, WhatsApp and most other apps, so you can reuse anything you copy here.
