How to change lowercase to uppercase
- Paste your text into the box above. On this page it converts to capitals automatically.
- Press Copy text.
- Paste it into your document, form or design.
Undo restores what you pasted if you need the original again.
When capitals are the right choice
Uppercase text stands out, which is useful in small doses:
- Acronyms and codes such as NASA, PDF, VAT numbers and booking references
- Short labels on buttons, tabs, signs and packaging
- Headings in posters and slides
- Forms that ask for block capitals
- Legal documents, where defined terms and some clauses are set in capitals
For anything longer than a line or two, avoid it. Capital letters are all the same height, so words lose their familiar outline and readers slow down. A paragraph in capitals also reads as shouting online.
Other ways to convert to uppercase
| Where | How |
|---|---|
| Microsoft Word | Select text, press Shift + F3 |
| Google Docs | Format, Text, Capitalization, UPPERCASE |
| Excel and Google Sheets | =UPPER(A1) |
| macOS apps such as Pages and TextEdit | Edit, Transformations, Make Upper Case |
| JavaScript | text.toUpperCase() |
| Python | text.upper() |
| CSS (display only) | text-transform: uppercase; |
If you only need capitals for looks on a web page, the CSS option is better than changing the text itself. Screen readers and search engines still get the normal text.
A note on special letters
Uppercasing follows Unicode rules, and a few letters behave in ways that surprise people. The German “ß” becomes “SS”, so “straße” turns into “STRASSE”. Accented letters keep their accents: “é” becomes “É”. Letters from scripts without case, such as Arabic or Hindi, are left unchanged.
