What inverse case does
Inverse case looks at each letter on its own and switches it. Capitals turn into small letters, small letters turn into capitals, and everything else is left alone.
| Input | Output |
|---|---|
| Hello World | hELLO wORLD |
| tHE MEETING IS AT NINE. | The meeting is at nine. |
| iPhone | IpHONE |
| ABC def 123 | abc DEF 123 |
The caps lock fix
This is what most people use the tool for. You type a paragraph, look up, and find caps lock was on the whole time. Because you were still pressing Shift for capitals, the result is reversed: small letters where capitals should be, and capitals everywhere else.
dEAR sARAH, THANK YOU FOR YOUR EMAIL.
Inverse case puts every letter back the way you meant it:
Dear Sarah, thank you for your email.
Names keep their capitals because you typed them with Shift as well. That is the advantage over sentence case, which would lowercase “Sarah”.
How to use it
- Paste the text into the box. On this page it is flipped automatically.
- Read the result. If it is not what you expected, press Undo.
- Press Copy text.
Typing instead of pasting? Press the iNVERSE cASE button when you are finished.
Other uses
- Start alternating caps with a capital. Make alternating case text, then invert it.
- Test your code. Swapped-case strings are handy for checking that a search or comparison ignores case.
- Stylized names. Some usernames and logos use a lowercase first letter followed by capitals.
In code and other apps
| Where | How |
|---|---|
| Microsoft Word | Change Case button (Aa), then tOGGLE cASE |
| Python | text.swapcase() |
| Vim | Select text, press ~ |
JavaScript and Excel have no built-in swap case function, which is one reason a small tool like this is useful.
