What lorem ipsum is
Lorem ipsum is the placeholder text that designers, developers and publishers have used for decades to fill a layout before the real words are ready. It starts with the familiar line “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit.” The words come from a Latin text by Cicero, but they have been chopped up and rearranged, so they look like natural language without saying anything.
That is the point. Real text distracts. If a client sees an early web page full of real sentences, they start editing the words instead of judging the layout. Placeholder text keeps attention on fonts, line length, spacing and how the page flows.
How to use the generator
- Under Generate, choose Paragraphs, Sentences, Words or List items.
- Set How many.
- Decide whether to Start with “Lorem ipsum”. It is on by default.
- Switch on Wrap in HTML tags if you are pasting into code.
- Press Generate new text for a different random version.
- Press Copy or Download to save it.
The text updates as soon as you change an option. The counts under the result show the number of characters, words and lines, which helps when you need to fill a box of a fixed size.
What each option produces
Paragraphs have four to seven sentences each and are separated by a blank line, or by <p> tags in HTML mode.
Sentences have between six and fourteen words. Longer ones get a comma near the middle, so the text has a natural rhythm.
Words gives an exact number of words ending with a full stop. Use it to fill a heading, a button or a short label.
List items are short phrases of three to seven words. In plain text each starts with a hyphen and a space. In HTML mode they become a <ul> list.
Examples
These are the results you see with the page’s starting settings, before you press Generate new text.
| Settings | Result |
|---|---|
| Words, 5 | Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet. |
| Words, 12 | Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet consectetur adipiscing elit curabitur lorem sunt metus. |
| Sentences, 2 | Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Velit nostrud et occaecat adipiscing voluptate integer. |
| List items, 3 | - Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, then - Cillum sagittis pariatur occaecat ut velit, then - Et occaecat adipiscing voluptate |
With Wrap in HTML tags on, three list items look like this:
<ul>
<li>Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet</li>
<li>Cillum sagittis pariatur occaecat ut velit</li>
<li>Et occaecat adipiscing voluptate</li>
</ul>
How it works
The generator picks words at random from a list of 100 Latin and Latin-like words used in traditional lorem ipsum. It builds sentences of random length, capitalizes the first word and ends each one with a full stop. The randomness comes from a seeded number generator, so the same settings always give the same text until you press Generate new text, which picks a new seed. That way the text does not jump around while you adjust How many.
When Start with “Lorem ipsum” is on, the first sentence is always the classic opening line, which most people recognize as placeholder text at a glance.
Tips for using placeholder text
- Match the real length. If the real product descriptions will be about 50 words, generate 50 words, not three paragraphs. Use the counts under the result to check.
- Test long and short content. Fill one card with a single sentence and another with three paragraphs to see how the layout copes.
- Replace it before launch. Search your pages for “lorem” before going live. Placeholder text left on a live page looks careless and can be indexed by search engines.
- Mind accessibility tests. Screen readers will try to read lorem ipsum aloud. Use real text when testing with users.
- Need a repeated phrase instead of random Latin? The text repeater copies any text as many times as you like.
To check how long your real text is once it arrives, paste it into the online sentence counter. For a visual summary of a finished article, try the word cloud generator.
Other ways to get lorem ipsum
Microsoft Word: type =lorem() on a new line and press Enter to insert Latin placeholder text. =lorem(3,5) gives three paragraphs of five sentences. =rand() inserts English sample text instead.
Google Docs: there is no built-in command, so most people paste text from a generator like this one.
Code editors: in VS Code and other editors with Emmet, type lorem and press Tab for a paragraph, or lorem20 for twenty words.
Figma and other design tools often include a placeholder text option or plugin.
