What a text repeater does

A text repeater makes many copies of the same text and joins them together. Doing this by hand with copy and paste works for three or four copies. For fifty, or a thousand, it is slow and you lose count. This tool does it instantly and exactly.

People use it to:

  • fill a message with a word or emoji for a joke or a celebration
  • create test data, such as a long string to check how a form or app handles it
  • make a template list, such as the same line repeated for every row of a sheet
  • write lines for practice, such as spelling words or handwriting sheets
  • build long strings of a single character, such as dividers or padding

How to use it

  1. Type or paste into Text to repeat. It can be one word, a sentence, an emoji or several lines.
  2. Set the Number of copies.
  3. Under Put between copies, choose New line, Space, Nothing, Comma, Blank line or Custom.
  4. With Custom, type your separator in Custom separator. Type \n where you want a line break.
  5. Switch on Number each copy to start each copy with 1., 2., 3. and so on.
  6. Press Copy or Download.

Under the result you see the number of characters, words and lines, which is handy if you are aiming for a length limit.

Examples

All results below were made with this tool. A ¶ marks a line break.

Text Copies Between copies Result
Hi 3 Space Hi Hi Hi
Hi 3 Comma Hi, Hi, Hi
Hi 3 Nothing HiHiHi
ha 5 Nothing hahahahaha
Hi 3 Custom, with a spaced vertical bar Hi | Hi | Hi
Hi 3 New line, numbered 1. Hi ¶ 2. Hi ¶ 3. Hi
Go team! 2 Blank line Go team! ¶ ¶ Go team!
abc 4 Custom: \n---\n abc ¶ --- ¶ abc ¶ --- ¶ abc ¶ --- ¶ abc

With the default settings, “I will not talk in class.” repeated 3 times gives three lines and 77 characters in total.

How it works

The tool builds a list with your text in it as many times as you asked, adds the number in front of each copy if numbering is on, then joins the list with the separator. Nothing is trimmed, so spaces at the start or end of your text are kept in every copy. That is useful when you want a space after each word but not at the very end: type the word with no space and choose Space as the separator.

Before building the result, the tool works out how long it will be. If it would go past about five million characters, it makes as many copies as fit and tells you so. Very large results can make a browser tab slow, and many apps cut off pasted text long before that size anyway.

Tips and limits

  • Check the app’s limit. Chat apps and social networks cap message length. A message that is too long may be cut off or refused. Use the character count under the result to stay below the cap.
  • Avoid spam. Repeating a message to fill someone’s inbox or a comment thread is against the rules of most platforms and can get an account blocked.
  • Emoji count as more than one character in some apps, because many emoji are made of several Unicode code points. The count here shows code points, so it is closer to what apps report than a simple length check in code.
  • Blank copies: to repeat an invisible character, copy one from the invisible text generator and paste it into the box.
  • Placeholder paragraphs: if you need filler text rather than the same sentence over and over, the lorem ipsum generator makes varied dummy text.

Other ways to do it

Excel and Google Sheets: =REPT("Hi ", 3) gives “Hi Hi Hi “ in one cell. To put copies on separate lines in one cell, use =REPT("Hi"&CHAR(10), 3) and turn on text wrapping. To fill many cells, type the text once and drag the fill handle down.

Word and Google Docs: copy the text, then paste repeatedly. Copying the pasted block and pasting again doubles it each time, so 2, 4, 8, 16 copies come quickly, but exact numbers take more care.

Code: in JavaScript, 'Hi '.repeat(3) or Array(3).fill('Hi').join(', '). In Python, 'Hi ' * 3 or ', '.join(['Hi'] * 3).

For other quick text tricks, the reverse text generator writes text backwards, letter by letter or word by word.

Text Repeater: questions and answers

How do I repeat text many times?

Type the text into the Text to repeat box and set the Number of copies. The repeated text appears on the right as you type. Press Copy to put it on your clipboard.

How many times can I repeat text?

The Number of copies box goes up to 100,000. The tool also stops at about five million characters in total so your browser stays responsive. If you hit that limit, the note under the tool tells you how many copies were made.

Can I put each copy on a new line?

Yes. New line is the default choice under Put between copies. You can also choose Space, Nothing, Comma, Blank line or Custom.

Can I use my own separator?

Choose Custom and type the separator in the Custom separator box, for example a vertical bar with spaces around it. Type \n where you want a new line.
