What typewriter text is
On a typewriter, every key moved the carriage the same distance. A narrow i and a wide m took up equal space on the page, which gave typed letters their steady, even rhythm. Fonts that work this way are called monospace or fixed-width, and they are still used for code, terminals, screenplays and anything that has to line up in columns.
People reach for typewriter text when they want a message to feel like a telegram, a ransom note in a film, a code snippet or an old document. This typewriter text generator gives you two ways to get that look.
How to use the typewriter text generator
- Type into the Your text box. Clear empties it.
- The large result at the top shows your text in Monospace. Press Copy to take it.
- Below that, the Code formatting in apps section wraps your text in the codes that chat and developer apps understand. Each one has its own Copy button.
- Scroll to More styles for every other style on the site, from bold to bubble letters.
The two kinds of output
The Monospace result is made of special Unicode characters. It looks fixed-width wherever you paste it, even in a bio or a display name, because the shape is part of each character.
The Code formatting in apps results are ordinary text with markers around it:
- Inline code puts one backtick on each side, like
`text`. Discord, Slack, Reddit, GitHub and WhatsApp show it in a fixed-width font. - Code block puts three backticks on their own lines above and below your text. Discord, Slack and GitHub show it as a block that keeps every space.
- WhatsApp monospace puts three backticks directly around the text, which is WhatsApp’s own monospace format.
- HTML wraps the text in a code tag for web pages and emails you edit as HTML.
How the monospace letters work
Unicode’s Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block includes a monospace alphabet, starting with the capital 𝙰 at U+1D670, and monospace digits starting at U+1D7F6. Mathematicians and programmers use them when a symbol has to be shown in a fixed-width face. The generator swaps each letter and digit for its monospace twin.
Spaces and punctuation are not part of this set. They stay as normal characters, which matters if you are trying to line things up, as the tips below explain.
Examples
These outputs come from running the generator.
| You type | Monospace result |
|---|---|
| Typewriter | 𝚃𝚢𝚙𝚎𝚠𝚛𝚒𝚝𝚎𝚛 |
| Dear diary | 𝙳𝚎𝚊𝚛 𝚍𝚒𝚊𝚛𝚢 |
| Room 404 | 𝚁𝚘𝚘𝚖 𝟺𝟶𝟺 |
With the backtick formats, “Room 404” becomes `Room 404` for inline code, or “Room 404” between two lines of three backticks for a code block.
Where typewriter text fits
- Bios and display names that should look technical or retro
- Story and poetry posts written as a letter, a telegram or a found document
- Chat messages that quote a command, a file name or an error message
- Screenplay-style captions for short scenes
- Developer profiles on sites without code formatting
On WhatsApp, the native formats are usually the better choice inside chats. The WhatsApp font generator covers bold, italic, strikethrough and lists there. For Discord, the Discord fonts generator lists all of its Markdown codes.
Tips and limits
Columns need a code block. Monospace Unicode letters are fixed-width, but the plain spaces between them are not, because the app shows spaces in its normal font. A table typed in monospace letters will drift out of line. Put tables and ASCII art inside a code block, where every character, spaces included, has the same width.
Prefer real formatting where it exists. Backtick codes keep your words as normal letters. They can be searched, copied as normal text and read correctly by screen readers. Unicode monospace cannot.
Screen readers. Many read Unicode monospace as “mathematical monospace capital T” and so on, or skip it. Keep anything important in plain text.
Copying code. Never share real code in Unicode monospace. Someone who copies it will get maths symbols, and it will not run. Use a code block.
Font support. Current phones and computers display these letters. Very old devices may show boxes instead.
