Fonts that work in the Instagram app
Instagram lets you choose a font for text on Stories and Reels, but your profile is stuck with the standard typeface. The bio, the Name field, captions and comments all use it. What you can change is which characters you type. Unicode includes alphabets that look like script, gothic or small capitals, and Instagram displays them like any other text.
That is all this page does. It turns your words into those alternative characters so you can paste them into the app.
How to style your Instagram profile
- Write your bio line, name or caption in the Your text box. Use the Enter key for line breaks.
- Check the featured styles at the top. They are the ones that read well on a small profile: Script, Bold Script, Small Caps, Sans Bold, Sans Italic, Gothic and Little Stars.
- Tap Copy next to the one you like.
- In Instagram, go to Edit profile and paste into Name or Bio. For a post, paste into the caption box.
- Want something different? The More styles list below has many others, each with its own Copy button.
If you are on a phone, tapping Clear empties the box so you can write the next line.
Ideas for bios, names and captions
| Where | Style | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Name field | Gothic | 𝔐𝔞𝔶𝔞 𝔓𝔞𝔱𝔢𝔩 |
| Bio headline | Bold Script | 𝓣𝓻𝓪𝓿𝓮𝓵 𝓭𝓲𝓪𝓻𝓲𝓮𝓼 |
| Bio detail line | Small Caps | Tʀᴀᴠᴇʟ ᴅɪᴀʀɪᴇꜱ |
| Call to action | Sans Italic | 𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘬 𝘪𝘯 𝘣𝘪𝘰 |
| Caption mood | Little Stars | ⋆。°✩ Coffee and sunsets ✩°。⋆ |
Small Caps keeps the first capital as a normal letter, because there is no small caps form for a capital. That is why “Travel” starts with a full-size T.
What Instagram allows where
- Username (your handle): letters, numbers, full stops and underscores only, up to 30 characters. No styled text.
- Name: styled text works. This is the line people see in bold on your profile.
- Bio: styled text works, within the 150 character limit.
- Captions: styled text works, up to 2,200 characters.
- Comments and direct messages: styled text works.
- Story and Reel text: use the app’s own fonts, which you choose inside the editor.
Why the Name field matters for search
Instagram search looks at your username and your Name field. A name written entirely in script is made of mathematical characters, not the letters someone types into the search bar, so you may be harder to find. A good compromise is a plain name with one styled word, or a plain name in the Name field and styling saved for the bio.
How it works
Each style is a lookup table. When you type an “a”, the tool finds the matching character in the chosen alphabet, such as 𝓪 for Bold Script, and writes that instead. Letters that have no match, like most punctuation, stay as they are. Decorated styles such as Little Stars keep your letters plain and add symbols before and after each line.
Tips
- Mix plain and styled lines. A bio where every line is styled is harder to read than one with a styled headline and plain details.
- Use line breaks. Short lines with one idea each look tidier on a phone screen.
- Preview before saving. Paste into the bio, then look at your profile on a phone before you leave it. Some rare styles show as boxes on older devices.
- Add space with care. If you want empty lines or centred text, the invisible text generator has blank characters that Instagram does not trim.
Limits
Screen readers handle styled letters badly. Some skip them, others read each one as a maths symbol. If your bio holds key information such as opening hours or contact details, write that part in normal text. Hashtags also need plain letters to work, so never style the word after the # sign.
For softer, dreamier looks, see the aesthetic text generator. If you post the same content on TikTok, the TikTok font generator covers that app’s bio and captions.
