What this underline tool does
On paper, underlining is the oldest way to make a word stand out. On social apps it is often missing. Instagram, TikTok, X, YouTube comments and most profile fields only take plain text, so there is nothing to click.
This page makes underlined text out of Unicode characters instead. You copy it like any other text, and the line comes with it: U̲n̲d̲e̲r̲l̲i̲n̲e̲.
Using the generator
- Write your text in the Your text box at the top. Clear empties it.
- Six line styles appear below in large type, each with a Copy button.
- Copy the one you want and paste it into your bio, post or message.
- If you are writing in Discord or building a web page, look at Underline codes for apps for the native version.
- Scroll down to More styles to see the same text in bold, script, bubble and many more.
The six styles
| Style | What you get | Mark used |
|---|---|---|
| Underline | one straight line, spaces included | U+0332 combining low line |
| Underline (words only) | one line per word | U+0332, spaces skipped |
| Double Underline | two parallel lines | U+0333 combining double low line |
| Wavy Underline | a small wave under each letter | U+0330 combining tilde below |
| Dotted Underline | two dots under each letter | U+0324 combining diaeresis below |
| Overline | a line above the text | U+0305 combining overline |
All of these are combining marks. A combining mark has no width of its own. It attaches to the character just before it and is drawn in the same space, the way an accent sits on an “é”. The generator adds one mark after every character you type.
Examples
Here is “read this” in each style, produced by the tool above:
| Style | Output |
|---|---|
| Underline | r̲e̲a̲d̲ ̲t̲h̲i̲s̲ |
| Underline (words only) | r̲e̲a̲d̲ t̲h̲i̲s̲ |
| Double Underline | r̳e̳a̳d̳ ̳t̳h̳i̳s̳ |
| Wavy Underline | r̰ḛa̰d̰ t̰h̰ḭs̰ |
| Dotted Underline | r̤e̤a̤d̤ t̤h̤i̤s̤ |
| Overline | r̅e̅a̅d̅ ̅t̅h̅i̅s̅ |
A few pairs in the wavy style, such as e with a wave under it, also exist in Unicode as a single accented letter (ḛ). Some apps swap the pair for that letter when you paste. It looks the same, so you will not notice a difference.
Real underlining in apps
A few places have proper underline formatting. Use it there, because the text underneath stays normal and can be searched and read aloud without problems.
| Where | Type this |
|---|---|
| Discord messages | __text__ |
| Web pages and HTML emails | <u>text</u> |
Discord’s code only works in messages. It does nothing in your display name, About Me or server name, so paste a Unicode style there. For bold, italic and spoiler codes on Discord, see the Discord fonts generator.
On websites, think twice before underlining words that are not links. Readers expect underlined text to be clickable and may try to tap it.
Tips for underlined text
- Pick the style for the job. A single line suits a title or a key word. Double underline works for totals and headings. Dotted and wavy lines feel lighter and suit decorative names.
- Avoid long underlined passages. The line makes letters harder to tell apart, especially letters that hang below the line.
- Mix with other styles carefully. Underlining already-styled letters, such as bold Unicode, can work, but some fonts place the mark poorly on them. Paste and check.
- Mind character limits. Every underlined letter counts as two characters, the letter and the mark. Short fields fill up fast.
What can go wrong
The line depends on the font on the reader’s screen. Modern phones and computers draw these marks well, but spacing varies. On some fonts the single line breaks into short dashes with gaps, or it crosses the tails of g, p and y. On very old systems the marks may show as empty boxes.
Screen readers do not treat these marks as an underline. Some skip them, which is fine. Others read out each mark, which turns a short word into a long string of noise. If the underline carries meaning, say it in words as well.
Search engines and in-app search also struggle. A search for “read” may not find r̲e̲a̲d̲, because the marks sit between the letters. Do not underline a name or keyword you want people to find.
